Simon and Sophie welcome you to The Blue Ship. A truly unique pub hidden away in the Sussex countryside, The Blue Ship has been a pub for at least 150 years, but the building dates back to the 16th Century. People often ask us 'why The Blue Ship'? The simple answer is no one seems to know, however, there are two theories - nether of which are proven.
The first theory is that the beams in the building originally came from a ship, or the other theory which seems the more likely is that the orginal name was in fact The Blue Sheep, named after an old Sussex breed of sheep, and this name was wrongly recorded in the old documentation and so changed to The Blue Ship.
As one of Britain's Real Heritage Pubs, the pub still retains its old features, the most interesting being that there is no actual bar servery, but simply two serving hatches. The ale, which is endorsed by Cask Marque, is still served direct from the cask and the pub has been featured in the 2011 edition of the Good Beer Guide. Of course, there is also a full selection of drinks such as you would expect to find in any pub.
As for the food, this again is typical traditional pub food much of which home cooked on the premises. Sunday roasts are particulary popular and it is best to book and reserve your roast to avoid dissapointment.
Being a proud Hall & Woodhouse pub, we serve ales from the cask such as Badger and Sussex. More information including cycling routes can be found at the Horsham Pub Guide website, and we are also featured on the Sussex Pub Links website.
